Bones Skateboard Wheels History

Bones began its influential movement in the skateboard industry in 1976. The company name was originally created for the urethane wheels designed by George Powell. The pioneers of the Bones brand were George Powell and Stacy Peralta. They formed the Bones Brigade skateboard team in 1979, which included many of the best skateboarders during this era.

Bones were the most popular skateboard company in terms of skateboards and wheels sales during the 1980s. Some of their famous decks included the Tony Hawk Iron Cross, McGill Skull and Snake, Caballero Dragon, Lance Mountain Future Primitive, and the Ray Underhill Cross.

In 1991, Peralta left the company and was re-branded as Powell Corporation, which is still considered to be a popular among pros and amateurs alike. The brand is widely accepted with the generation of the 70s and 80s skaters who remember the image of the pop art style graphics of the classic decks. More recently, the company has seen some flashback 1980s success due to the re-issue decks under the new brand, Powell Classic.

Bones Skateboard Wheels Construction Technology

Bones has designed many different variations in skateboard wheels. The color, size, and durability selection has been created for a wide range of skateboarders.

Bones Bushing Construction Technology

  • Hardcore Soft provides very easy turning, quick, smooth response and good centering.
  • Hardcore Medium is formulated for a majority of skaters who want a quick, positive response and control to skate anywhere or anything.
  • Hardcore Hard provides high resistance and ultra quick response throughout the full turning range.

Bones Bearings Construction Technology

All Bones Bearings are Skate Rated™ to withstand the destructive forces created by high performance skating. This is our way of saying that just using a bearing with an ABEC rating is not enough to ensure that a bearing will perform well for skating, since ABEC ratings were intended for electric motor bearings, not skate bearings. We have adjusted the tolerances, clearances, lubricant, and component materials to optimize Bones Bearings for use in dirty, high impact environments … where you skate. That’s why they roll faster and last longer than mere ABEC rated bearings.
