What To Do When Your Package is Lost or Stolen

Buying your favorite products is easier than ever when you can just browse online and have them shipped directly to you! But with that convenience comes its own unique challenges and setbacks: namely, lost or stolen packages.

Here at Warehouse Skateboards, we do everything we can to fill your order accurately and in a timely manner so you can get to skating as soon as possible. Once your shipment leaves our building, it’s in the capable hands of a shipping carrier. When something then goes wrong with the delivery of your order, we know how frustrating it can be to try and get your items back on track.

Although our policies state that you need to work directly with the carrier to locate your package, we’d like to go ahead and provide you with all the necessary steps for what to do when your package is lost or stolen.

Cover your bases

First things first: if your package should have been delivered by now, we suggest checking the tracking information you were provided when you placed the order. If it says that you should have received your package by now, and you’ve allowed for at least 36 additional hours after the anticipated delivery timeframe to account for delayed shipments, conduct a thorough search to make sure it wasn’t overlooked by you at some point or redirected. That means revisiting your doorstep, garage, porch, front desk, leasing office, and all mailboxes, and asking around with any family members or neighbors who may have signed for the package when you weren’t home. If none of these options have what you’re looking for, it’s time to move on to the next step.

Trace the package

A member of our staff can check your package’s status in our network, but we also suggest that you contact the shipping company directly and ask the carrier to double-check your order’s whereabouts. Delays are common, especially during peak shipping seasons. But if the shipping status suggests your package should have been delivered, and no one has laid eyes on it, then your shipping company will have a claims process for you to follow.

File a claim with the shipping company

All shipping companies have a claims process in place in the event of lost or stolen packages. When you place your order and receive a confirmation of shipment, you’ll also be provided with the right contact information if you have questions or concerns about your package. Follow these instructions for the most direct way to file your claim.

Protect your purchase

Most credit card companies and PayPal offer a solid purchase protection policy that ensures you’ll be reimbursed for fraud or for stolen items. Just remember that coverage usually doesn’t extend to high-value purchases; you’ll need to check out your provider’s website or get on the phone with a representative if you think your package might raise any issues. Your homeowner or renter insurance policy may help if this is the case. These policies usually cover stolen packages above a certain deductible. If you’re not sure if you should file a claim, contact your insurance representative to discuss your options.

Prevention

Luckily, there are tons of ways you can help prevent the frustration of stolen packages before you ever even order anything online. The most direct option you have, besides investing in package insurance from the vendor, is to arrange for all of your packages to be received in person. Just let your postal service know to always collect your signature before leaving a delivery on your doorstep, or go ahead and have it shipped to your office to avoid any confusion. You can also set up a secure pick-up location, like a PO Box or make the trip to your local UPS center, or buy a combination-protected lockbox for your porch.

Security cameras and apps have grown popular in the last year as well, with features like real-time feeds you can watch on your phone and the ability to speak to mail carriers and visitors through a microphone, no matter where you are. The best part is that most models aren’t that expensive, or difficult to set up, so you can easily have yours installed and ready to go for the next delivery.

Lost or stolen items will probably always be an annoying hazard of ordering merchandise online, but that shouldn’t stop you from taking advantage of the convenience!
